First make sure your section titles use Heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2) from the Home tab.

The table of contents is built from these.

Steps in text

  1. First make sure your section titles use Heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2) from the Home tab.
  2. Click where you want the table of contents to appear.
  3. Insert the table of contents and choose an automatic style.
  4. The table of contents appears, built from your Heading styles.
